The Most Romantic Hotels in San Diego

Hotel Solamar

On the edge of the Gaslamp Quarter, just blocks from dozens of dining and nightlife options, the 10 story Kimpton Solamar San Diego offers convenience along with chic contemporary style. The hotel’s spacious rooftop terrace, which features a pool, fire pits, and a bar, has quite the scene on sunny days and balmy evenings. Kimpton Solamar completed an $8 million overhaul in 2016. The hotel’s new look nods to contemporary Spanish style. Think woven vinyl headboards and a bold mix of geometric patterns and vibrant pops of color, with an emphasis on violet hues.
Kimpton Solamar’s bathrooms max out with Mexican tile inspired wall coverings, surfboard inspired mirrors, a black stone sink, and a bold brass light fixture. Some rooms feature subway tile clad tubs. Solamar, the first Southern California outpost of the Kimpton boutique hotel brand, was designed to look like an old brick warehouse to fit in with the historic Gaslamp Quarter. Like the exterior, the recently renovated lobby mixes classic and contemporary elements. The wood beam ceiling and chandeliers nod to Spanish colonial style, while contemporary art and colors keep things fresh. The hotel’s rooftop Solamar Terrace, accessible by private elevator, features a heated pool in an oasis like space with contemporary white chaises, cabanas, chic wire chairs, and a shaded outdoor banquette in royal blue with bright yellow pillows. The terrace also includes several fire pits and the hotel’s Upper East bar.

La Valencia

Rose hued and luxurious, the Spanish Mediterranean style La Valencia has been a La Jolla icon for more than 90 years. Once a hideaway for Hollywood legends like Gregory Peck and Ginger Rogers, The Pink Lady now caters mostly to tourists and business travelers, along with the occasional celeb. The famous building has a stucco exterior with terracotta roof tiles, a windswept tower, hand-painted murals, and grounds dotted with vibrant bougainvillea and geraniums, as well as elegant traditional decor, ocean views, and a lovely pool lined by palm trees. Just a couple of blocks from La Jolla Cove and sun baked sandy beaches, La Valencia is ideally located in walkable seaside La Jolla, which is home to many boutiques and restaurants.
The majority of La Valencia’s swanky guestrooms feature coastal views. Sophisticated decor nods to old school Hollywood glamour, with soft hues, classic furnishings, plush beds topped with imported linens, and sumptuous European-style bathrooms. La Valencia’s 250 square foot Vintage rooms are on the cozier side but feature Eastern king beds and a coastal view option. The residentially inspired Classic rooms are much more spacious 400 to 850 square feet and include junior suites. And the Villa rooms have a fireplace, a private patio or balcony, a seating area with a wet bar, and a soaking tub.

Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa

On a sun drenched afternoon, Estancia La Jolla Resort & Spa is especially lovely. The privacy minded property, once a famous equestrian ranch, features rancho style architecture and 10 acres of verdant gardens, serene courtyards, adobe fireplaces, and paths that wind through the grounds. There’s also a large pool and an on site spa. Across from the UC San Diego campus, Estancia is perched on a coastal bluff well above the ocean, but from the hotel, the Black’s Beach is only a four minutes drive or a 25 minutes walk if you don’t mind a heart pumping uphill walk back, that is.
Black’s Beach is a secluded surfing and sunbathing spot, but be forewarned: It’s also one of the most popular nude beaches in the country. Airy, attractive rooms feature warm colors and comfortable furnishings that complement the white stucco and terracotta tile roofing of the hacienda chic hotel. Spacious rooms feature either a king bed or two queens. Some have a private balcony or patio. Elegant bathrooms have console sinks with marble counters and a white tiled bathtub shower combo.
